I find I am less distracted watching a movie adapted from a book if I have never read the book, or just pretend I haven't read it. Adaptations can never replicate the experience I had reading the book. Rather, they just create a new experience for me.
Another adaptation that I thought was as good as the book was Misery. Yes, there were some elements that were different from the book, but not so different that it was distracting. That, and Kathy Bates was incredible as Annie.
